What If There Was a March and No One Cared

I am a pretty conservative girl and tend to not push my views on those of you in my circles.  I don't have bumper stickers on my vehicles to save whirled peas or baby snails so when I joined a march on Saturday I felt a bit out of my realm.

My neighbor rode her bike, my other neighbor car-pooled with a group of farm market friends, and my sweetie and I walked to the park where everyone was to meet.  My biking neighbor (probably as conservative as I am) and I felt a bit out of place as we had no signs to carry or t-shirts showing our cause.  Still, we made our way towards the center to hear the man with the bull horn and his message to the choir.

After a few folks took their turn broadcasting their message there was a young man reminding us that we are law-abiding citizens, we will obey all traffic lights and we will not cause any problems.  We followed the leader with the bull horn from the park and took to the sidewalk on our way to the county courthouse.

Making our way north we were on a lessor traveled street and the folks that saw us passing by looked on with blank looks.  A FW firetruck drove by our march and the guys joined in the chant as we waited our turn at the red light but they seemed to be the only drive-bys to notice our cause. Realizing we were in the quiet part of the grouping and feeling a little sheepish, we decided to part the march and carry out our cause in a different way.

Since we have the fancy dvr, my sweetie recorded all the local channels to see if our cause had made the news.  One little blip on one station and nothing to tell how this message was being played this day in 52 countries and 436 cities.

So, did you hear about it?

Marchers in over 400 cities protest  Monsanto

Want to learn more about it?  I have a couple links that are very informative:

What is the Monsanto Protection Act and Why is it All Over Facebook?
The Scary Truth About Genetically Modified Foods and What You Should Do
How to Avoid GM Foods?

Think heirloom seed saving is safe?  Read what is happening in the European Union here.

Might be time to for us all to get involved. I am not saying we should all go out and machete a field of corn.  Please.  Use your voice in the market place.  Read the label. Call your congressman and tell them you want your food products labeled if they contain GMO ingredients.  Better yet, grow your own from non-GMO seeds.  And tell at least one other person what you have learned.

Have you joined the non-GMO movement?

Food should be a priority for everyone - after all, we all MUST eat! I am all for Monsanto being a company that modifies seed *for those that wish to purchase and knowingly and willingly eat that type of seed*. But, for such food to be protected from labeling so that the consumer doesn't know what is in the seed is not acceptable. To have Monsanto begin to patent heirloom seeds that they did not "create" is not acceptable.

I had not heard about this protest, but am glad you brought it to my attention. Only until enough people begin to protest will things change. Good for you!

Tufa, thank you for marching and for blogging. This is such an important issue and I fear only farmers and a few gardeners are really aware of what is going on at this point.

I buy as much organic produce and meat as possible. All of our beef is grass fed and purchased from local farms. I clicked the links and thought checking the SKU was a great tip for helping to make wise purchases. I didn't know about the protests until they were over. This is excellent info.
