He's my favorite

Salvia, that is. Salvia splendens 'Van Houteii' (Van Houteii sage, Scarlet sage, Scarlet salvia). There are many cultivars being created these days, some purple, orange, etc. My favorite is the scarlet.

Found some this last summer and bought 5 one gallon pots. Still have 4. Been torturing the poor babies through the move, heat and now no rain since August. Somehow he is happy enough right now to be giving me a fabulous show right out the back door.

The flowers start as this group of colorful bracts. (Sorry this is blurry. Need a camera with a better macro function.)

This photo shows a bit more orange shade. I really want to get him planted with the crinum (with the scarlet leaves) sitting behind him. Van Houtteii salvia is a tender perennial (USDA zone 5-9) unless established so I will be hauling him into my greenhouse this winter.

How Much?

Not an issue of if it will snow here but how much! I really hope it makes it all the way to San Antonio on Friday since I have to work. I would hate to miss it as it so very rarely happens here.

Cut all the roses off the 'La Biche'* (the doe in French). The flowers will be ruined by the extreme cold. I gave Sheri (our neighbor) some for her home as I had quite the bouquet.

(* for you rosarians - read more about the correct name of this rose here. Was called 'La Biche', then 'Sombreuil' then may have been confused with 'Colonial White', now she is called 'Mlle. de Sombreuil'..... She will be 'La Biche' to me. Besides that, mine does not look like their 'Mlle. de Sombreuil' photo.)

Some of my salvia collection that likes to bloom in the fall/winter - just about the time the frost will take the plant down to the ground. Another one....

I have forgotten both of the salvias' names, I need to do a little research.

My sweetie said this is the best they have ever looked. At least I have photos to compare in years to come.
