I rarely watch the national news but happened to catch this while waiting for the local news to begin. Basic concept, Americans spend on average $700 on Christmas presents each year. If you buy $64 in Made in America goods - 200,000 jobs can be created. Read the article here or click on any photo on this posting.
Even if your holiday shopping is complete take a moment to see where the items you purchased are made/assembled. It is an eye-opening experience.
I can (and will!) definitely do this, Cindy! We're so partial to buying American, it only makes good sense. Sure, you can save a few bucks on imports, but what's the point? I would much rather buy local.
The map is very interesting, so good to see how many things are still made here, but sure wish there were more...hopefully, someday, we can turn this around.
I'm in Canada but I suspect buying locally would have a similar impact here. We generally try and spend locally anyway as we live in a small town where buying local can mean saving someone's job. Craft fairs are my favourite because they are so unique as well as made locally. Second best is local small stores like the small toy store instead of the box store.
Great question! I was actually out shopping today, and looked at the labels. I'm sorry to say some of the countries I had never heard of! I will make sure I buy at least $64 worth of goods from the USA this year. What a great and yet simple goal. I did buy more plants today (from a local mom and pop nursery) - does that count? ;)
