Hold Up on the Rain Dance

There seems to be something brewing out in the Gulf at the moment. Before everyone does a little rain dance for Texas consider a few things...

251 counties out of 254 are in drought conditions. Some dangerously severe. During the recent fires in Palo Pinto county it was reported the soil moisture in the area was at 1%.

Consider everything North and West of the red line is mostly rocky terrain. This is an over simplication of the Texas geology of course but follow my line of thought.

With a great deal of Texas soils in a dehydrated condition, throw in rocky and/or steep topography, rainfall can result in flooding conditions quickly. We all saw what happened to Vermont recently.

We appreciate your prayers for rainfall -- just throw in the caveat that we would like a slow, soaking rain.

Hope the weather is wonderful for you wherever you are.

You have my prayers for the slow, soaking rain, Cindy! We just had a windstorm go through this morning that almost tipped Ernie over, woweee, talk about a fast-mover. Not much damage here, but a few miles away they've got a mess.

Rain is wonderful, but nobody needs flooding; crazy weather lately.

Passers by are always quick to insult me, when rain is in the forecast and I'm out there watering. But, water sticks to water. I live in a high flash flood area. If I water before it rains, the soil is ready and my little posies get a good long drink. (I've given up trying to explain this to people. :)

Here's hoping you have a nice quiet drizzle to cool things down a bit.

We do need a slow, soaking rain! When I hand water the water just seems to skate on the surface.:/ So, I have learned to let it slowly drip and set the hose down. I am soooo tired of hand watering.

Hopefully our prayers for you will be answered TG! The Herbal Husband and Kate/High Altitude Gardening are on the same page! His watering does bring the rain. Have to send him your way! Hope you get all wet over Labor Day, TG!

A rain dance for the slow soaking rain. You make such a good point about intensity of rain and how it affects the sol.

Well, I for one am so tired of this drought, I'm ready for the other three seasons of Texas - flood, hurricanes and tornadoes! ;)

Cindy, you have my vote for slow and steady. Rain seems to be lacking so many places, but like here, it falls and runs off. Slow and steady is the words of the day.

Sorry if we got overly enthusiastic, but according to the weather tonight the storm sounds stuck over Louisiana. We'll focus on something nice and slow but freqent.

Hoping and praying you get exactly the type of rain you need for recovery. I'm out watering heavily today because we are expecting storms here too. I don't want all of that expensive soil I've labored to create to wash away.
