Braving the backyard

Following gardening blogs this time of year is a pretty grim task. Everybody, including us in the south, is pretty brown and crispy. I really did not think I would find anything of note to photo but I had to water the greenhouse so I ventured forth...

The strawberries and the blueberries in the "berry boat" are green. There is a green arching branch of a rose just above the boat. Back against the fence on the right is my Sweet Autumn clematis which is still green. From here on in the inspection becomes a task closer to the ground...

A sign of life to one of my salvias. Hopefully they will look like this again someday.

The "lenten rose" (Helleborus orientalis) on the left, is a reliable evergreen. Must be planted in summer shade here in Central Texas. The alstroemeria (Peruvian lily - Lily of the Incas) on the right, being green was a bit of surprise for me. Perhaps the protection of the hackberry tree has kept it green in spite of cold nights.

The ferny little plants are the larkspur returning. The larger dicot (two leaf) seedings are a mystery to me. Thankfully, I do know they are not hackberry.

You guys have got a little green down there. Things are pretty bleak up here in North Carolina. Mostly just a big soggy mess.

It's very sad. I really only go outside in my yard to water the dogs and birds and to wrap the faucets.
