I just had to laugh

Photo from 8/27/09:

Then on 8/31/09 ...

This rose bush was headed to the compost bin at work. It was not performing as it should have (really long canes) so I took it home to the great expanse of our backyard - where it proceeded to take over with really long canes. I took it down to the ground (actually below ground) and walked away. It came back and then decided to bloom.

This is where I quote one of my favorite gardeners, Felder Rushing: "You can prune a rose with a cherry bomb and it will bloom."

He's right.

Your soil looks so dark and healthy! You've given the rose a good foundation.

Thank you. It started out as a dry area over the septic. You are actually looking at pecan hull mulch that has broken down nicely. The grass is constantly wanting to grow here now.
