The queen inoculates the decaying leaves with a fungus which spreads to all leaves collected. The fungus left is what the ants consume. Difficult to kill the nest since their den is deep in the ground. The queen can take the fungus and start a new community. The worker ants do not pick up pesticide baits and are difficult to spray.
